About the event

Spotlight‎

This year's theme will be "Public Health Vets: All Paws on Deck!"

Event Agenda

This year's event will feature:

  • Presentations by CDC and non-CDC veterinary speakers showcasing the many roles of veterinarians in public health,
  • Panels highlighting interagency collaboration and opportunities for students, and
  • An interactive outbreak scenario in which attendees will work with each other, and with public health veterinarians, to solve a mock zoonotic disease outbreak.

Lodging and transportation

The closest hotel to the CDC Roybal Campus is the Emory Inn and Conference Center Hotel directly across the street (1615 Clifton Road, Atlanta, GA 30329). Students and faculty can visit CDC Vet Student Day Passkey, to access a special government rate for Emory Inn and conference Center. Attendees are welcome to stay at any hotel. Transportation to and from the reception or event will not be provided.

Walking

CDC's Visitor Center is located 0.5 miles (11-minute walk) from the Emory Conference Center Hotel.

Driving

Attendees may drive to the CDC Visitor Center on the morning of the event. If driving, please allow at least 15 minutes for the security check of all visitor vehicles arriving on CDC's campus (including rental cars, rideshare, and taxis). Please note that visitor parking is limited, so we encourage you to carpool or use alternate modes of transportation if possible.

  1. When you enter the CDC campus, veer right to proceed to the security checkpoint. Identify yourself as a visitor for Veterinary Student Day.
  2. Security officers will ask to see your picture ID (driver's license, passport, or state-issued photo ID) and will do a quick scan of the undercarriage of your vehicle.
  3. Security officers will then ask you to open both the trunk and the hood of your car for inspection. You may be asked to step out of the vehicle while it is being inspected.
  4. You will then be directed to the visitor parking deck (straight ahead), which is connected to the Visitor Center. CDC staff with the Veterinary Student Day will meet you in the lobby of the Visitor Center to assist you.

Rideshare pickup and dropoff

Visitors using a rideshare service (like Uber or Lyft) should let their drivers know to drop them off at the designated rideshare drop off area outside the main campus gate (look for the sign). Drivers can also pick them up from this area.

Taxi services

Taxi fares from Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport to hotels near CDC generally cost around $40-50 dollars per trip. Uber and Lyft are also available in Atlanta and can be accessed from the rideshare area of the airport.

Public transportation

MARTA (Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority) is Atlanta's public transportation system. If you wish to take the MARTA rail or bus, please plan your route on the MARTA website. Note that MARTA does not stop directly at the CDC campus, but there is a MARTA bus stop across the street.

All MARTA fares must be purchased with a Breeze card ($2), Breeze ticket ($1), or using the Breeze Mobile app (free). MARTA fare is $2.50 for a one-way trip.

What to expect

Arrival times

Each school will be assigned an arrival time for Monday, January 27, 2025, between 7:15am to 7:45am. Check back soon to see what arrival time your school has been assigned.

Safety and security

CDC welcomes you to its main campus! Before your visit, there are a few important things you should know:

  • A U.S. government-issued picture ID is required. Please have one of the following:
    • Driver's license
    • Passport
    • State-issued photo identification card
  • Dress should be business casual.
  • No cameras are allowed.
  • Visitor badges must be worn at all times.
  • You must be escorted by a CDC employee to all non-event areas.
  • Professional conduct is expected.

CDC has strict safety and security measures. Before the event, your name will be checked and cleared through our security process. When you first arrive on campus, you will be brought to the CDC Visitor Center where a CDC representative will greet and check you in. They will provide you with a visitor's badge and an informational packet for the day. Due to security constraints, we will not be able to provide a walking tour of our facilities.

Visitors and employees generally pass through a metal detector, similar to that at the airport, before entering the facilities. Therefore, it is very important that you do not carry items that could be considered potential weapons, including pocketknives, on that day.

Meals

Light refreshments will be served during breaks, and a boxed lunch will be provided at mid-day.

Photography

Veterinary Student Day will take place in our conference center. We will have an official photographer on site taking professional pictures of the event. These pictures will be available for download following the event. By attending this event, you consent to having your photograph taken and potentially used in materials promoting future Veterinary Student Days.
